Trip Description

Join Dr. Michael Kudish as we explore a botanically rich area north of Margaretville, NY. Leatherwood (Dirca palustris) is an uncommon species in the Catskills and often found on rich, high pH sites. INaturalist includes only three unverified observations in the Catskills. The New York Flora Atlas lists two reports of the species from Ulster County. Dr. Kudish found the plant almost a decade ago in this location. Is this unusually botanically rich Catskills site on a rare outcrop of limestone in an acid sandstone region? We hope to find out. We will walk in on private land approximately .5 miles to begin our search and exploration. If we have time we may take a detour to explore a nearby bog.

More details about the trip and the meeting place will be sent after completing registration. If you have any questions feel free to contact us at dirca@nyflora.org.
