Trip Description
Join Mike Corey botanizing along the trail to and the summit of Moxham Mountain. The trail is 2.7 miles long, to the summit and back (5.4 miles round-trip); grades vary from level to gentle to moderate to pretty steep near the summit, but it’s a good family-oriented trail. It is DEC-maintained, well designed and well-marked. There are several open, bedrock ledge views along the trail, prior to reaching the summit, where there is a great open bedrock ledge area for lunch and terrific views to the south and west.
The trail passes through yellow birch-beech-sugar maple-white pine forest, and includes a small stream crossing; the stream exits from a small open wetland that was borne of an old beaver dam. Soils are generally thin over acidic bedrock, with plenty of moss and lichen species, especially in the open areas. At the exposed rocky summit, three-toothed cinquefoil and pink corydalis can be found amongst the south-facing ledges.
Bring good hiking footwear, raingear, plenty of water, lunch and snacks for the hike. Assume ticks will be present and be prepared to repel them.
We will meet at a location that will be communicated to those who register.
