Join Dr. Michael Kudish as we explore sites on Pakatakan and Shavertown Mountains near Arkville, NY. Our first stop is Pakatakan Mountain, just outside Margaretville, with northern red oak, white oak, American chestnut, shagbark and bitternut hickories, and black birch. Since a NYFA field trip several years ago, more Adoxa and other plants rare to NY and the Catskills have been found and we will explore the area to expand the number of stations. The second stop is Shavertown Mountain, on the north side of the Pepacton Reservoir, between Margaretville and the Shavertown Bridge. It has all the Pakatakan species plus a few chestnut oak and an array of burn shrubs like mountain laurel, sweet fern, maple leaf viburnum. Dr. Kudish will discuss the Burn Index, indigenous peoples landscape and forest history.
These are relatively short hikes on moderate terrain. Bring lunch, ample water, stout hiking shoes/boots, and rain gear. There are ticks so be prepared to repel them.
More details about the trip and the meeting place will be sent after completing registration. If you have any questions feel free to contact us at pakatakan@nyflora.org.
