Trip Description

Join us for a trip to Wolf Gull to explore a ravine on the major drainage divide of Lake Ontario and Chesapeake Bay that is home to 32 fern species. We will explore the gull, where most species of interest can be found, but will mosey up to the ridgetop if time allows. Highlights in the gull include Goldie’s fern (Dryopteris goldiana), silvery spleenwort (Deparia acrostichoides), glade fern (Homalosorus pycnocarpos), cut-leaf grape fern (Botrychium dissectum), and also basil balm (Monarda clinopodia). Fern highlights on the ridgetop include fragile fern (Cystopteris fragilis), rusty woodsia (Woodsia ilvensis), and blunt-lobed woodsia (Woodsia obtusa ssp. obtusa).

The terrain will vary and may include crossing the stream as well as steep hillsides. We will plan to break for lunch in the field. Be sure to bring lunch, plenty of water, and whatever else needed for a day afield.
